I find Twitter to be invaluable. As you show in your replies to readers, the interaction is hugely important. This interaction can be greatly enhanced by most bloggers both on the blog, and off.

Here is an observation I made about the use of Twitter in reaching a more engaged audience. http://bit.ly/16GsqF

[...] As I’ve said before, Website users have the attention–span of goldfish. As soon as they complete their task, they want to know what to do next. It is up to us to provide them with a next step and to not leave them with nothing to do. If you leave your users with no clear next step what do you think they will do? With a simple mouse click they’ll leave your site forever. Lost opportunity. [...]

Twitter has been great. The secret to generating traffic via Twitter is reciprocation. If you connect and reciprocate links with great people, like the ones I recommended two blog posts ago, you'll gain some momentum. Also, the tips I recommended at the bottom of this article are effective in my experience.

I think you are right, you seem to know your stuff, but blog promotion sounds like a full-time job. I'd starve if I did this for a living ;) I sent out three tweets today about a blog post and requested retweets. Out of 55 followers I got exactly 0 retweets. Not hard to figure the percentages on that!
