Funny, clients don't want to "waste" pixels, and resort to so many cluttered "calls to action" "above the fold." Zeldman's on the soapbox lately: they're not users, they're readers. It's al stuff Gruber nailed along time ago.

While a webpage can go indefinitely in all directions, does what you have to say need to go that far?

"And the conversions are clear: subscribe, comment, share."

So, just wondering - do you track those conversions in Google Analytics? Have your redesigns resulted in not only more content clicks, but also in more conversion clicks too?

Did you check to see if "supplemental navigation...about only 10% of the navigation..." was also the highest, or lowest converting traffic? In other words, just because only 10% of your navigation clicks are within the supplemental nav, doesn't mean that they're also the lowest converting segment - or does it?

GA's advanced segments should be able to show you that pretty quickly. Curious to learn what you find. Great post btw.

Hey Brian,

I read this post and I totally agree with you. I know you posted it a while ago but I was reading it using the new Reader in Safari 5, which just came out. I guess that could be the answer to our [web designer's] dilemma: To fill our website with advertisement and annoying to the reader junk, or not to fill our website with advertisement and...

I agree with the less is more philosophy. We recently overhauled our site to get rid of all the unnecessary "junk" which was just distracting the user from what we really wanted them to notice.
